difficulties with downloading from net

I am having difficulties downloading onto my computer.
When I go to a website that has software available to
download, I click on the button to begin the download,
however the download does not start automatically. So I
click on "download now" and a new webpage opens that is
blank with the exception of a small box in the upper left
hand corner of the page that has a circle, square, and
triangle in it. The web address always reads as a .exe
file, but the download does not occur. This doesn't
always happen. For example, I was able to download a
program called Trillian and update my AOL IM, but I can't
download Ad-Aware or download a patch from Microsoft's
own website. Anyone got any ideas?

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
