differentiate between modes

Is it possible to change the look of the screen to make it
clear when the user is in Filter mode as opposed to edit
mode. I have some inexperienced users who think they are
working in a filter and instead are entering information
on an existing record?
Is it a case of making a button which opens the same form
with a different colour, for example, when they are
searching for records. or is there a more sophisticated
way of doing it?

Set the controls to Locked in Filter mode. You need to leave any combo
boxes which are used to set up the filters unlocked, of course.

How do I set the locked property in filter mode? All I see
in the Locked property is Yes/No. Am I missing something?
