Different formats for page numbers in different sections

I've seen a document where the format of the page numbering is different in
different sections of the document. The index is numbered using I, II...
The rest is numbered using 1, 2... The page numbers are located in the page
footer. How do I accomplish this in my document? Whatever format I choose
it changes the whole document, not just the section I'm working on.
 
You can have different page number styles in different sections
