What different is between 3Com and Realtek Nic?

- Support
- Cost
- Some would argue quality

That question is sort of like comparing a microsoft and logitech mouse or a
samsung or viewsonic monitor.. Lots of little differences - what
specifically are you trying to figure out?

I don't.

LAN - Local Area Network. Your computer only needs ONE Network Card (NIC)
to participate on a LAN. A secondary card would make you "multi-homed" and
would only be needed if sharing your Internet connections with others and is
NOT the preferred method. DSL/Cable routers are cheap and provide (in some
cases) built in firewall protection.

Now if you mean why are there two different NICs existing on your LAN as a
whole - well, that is simple. Different manufacturers/people put different
NICs in those computers. For my LAN at work we probably have a few hundred
different NICs spread around in different computers all on the SAME LAN.
The Network Card is just the means to participate - name brand only matters
slightly (quality, compatability, etc.)

In two different computers? They should be compatible and work as well as the
same brand in each computer, allowing one computer to talk with another.

Do you have two NICs on one computer? What are they connected to?
 
In addition, you may simply have a "built-in" lan residing on the
motherboard which will probably be rhe Realtek and a 3Com add-in card. The
3Com may be giving you Gigahertz speed where the Realtek may not be fast
enough to go the speed of your network. If the Realtek is not connected to
anything it should either be removed in the bios in on MB or totally removed
from system. The 3Com card normally will be a better quality card and be
more reliable in the long run.

Also, Norton Ghost will probably have drivers for the 3Com card and may not
have drivers for the Realtek card to enable ghosting across the network with
a floppy boot. Your IT people may have inserted the 3Com card for that
purpose.

Just an idea.
