Airman Basic

Duye to inadequate research on my part, I have a new 9600XT in my new
computer and a perfectly operational 9600SE with nowhere to go. My older
2 computers, a 1.4 gig Athlon and a 750 Athlon, both have 8500SE cards
and have given good service. Is it worth the trouble to replace either
8500 with the 9600SE?

Do you mean 8500LE, ie. clocked slightly lower than a regular 8500?
A 8500 is nearly always faster than a 9600SE because the latter only has
a 64bit RAM bus. The 8500 often beats the 9600, too. The 8500LE
shouldn't be *that* much slower.
Look at eg. http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-03.html
The only reason to prefer the 9600SE would be if you desperately need
any of the new features (DirectX 9 shaders, Fullstream, ...).
