differences in d.p.i.?

Hi-

I am looking to buy a photo quality inkjet, and am confused about d.p.i.
ratings. I see one printer will have 720 x 1280, and another will have
1280 x 1400(numbers obviously not accurate), what are these
numbers-dimensions, clarity or both?

Also, can anyone recommend a model under $250.00? I've been told epson
looks the best-feedback?

First number (usually lowest!) actual ink 'dots' per inch in a 'horizontal'
(printing) line. Second number is the number of lines per inch capable of
the stepper motor.
 
Loosely, these numbers have to do with the dot density that the printer lays
down---horizontal and vertical. The problem is that you will never see
these dots. What I not seen from any mfg is a spec on actual resolving
power.

David Chien has done some testing (www.silverace.com), and I'm sure someone
else has too.

It is not only the dpi that matters but the ink droplet size. A smaller
droplet size will give a better picture.
 
They are on Epsons. You have to dig with HP. Canon's ink droplet sizes are
pretty widely available.
 
PS: Epson's can also do variable droplet sizes. You get small droplets
where the detail matters and larger dots where it doesn't need detail. By
being able to vary the droplets you can get faster printing also.
