i want to know the difference between 1.win98 & win2000
2.win2000 & win2000server 3. winNT & win2000 4. Win98 &
win NT
Consult Microsoft's website.
A simplified overview follows:
Win98 is an upgrade of Win3.1, which is really DOS with a pretty face, and
added capabilities, such as acting as a workstation in a network. IMO, too
buggy to use. WinME was the last version of this series of OS's, and is OK as
desktop platform. Won't run current versions of most applications, but will
rin older games very nicely.
WinNT is Microsoft's development of OS/2, the first versions of which it
built for IBM (who then took their property, and developed it further -- both
IBM and MS have rights to the original code, buried somewhere deep inside
these OS's.) It is not DOS at all, but includes a (limited) DOS emulator.
WinNT is intended as a network server, but will happily operate a stand-alone
desktop or workstation.
Win2000 is upgraded WinNT(you could call it WinNT5), and is intended to run
a desktop. Win2000 Server is intended to run a network. However, W2000 has
limited networking capabilities, and of course any Server OS can also run a
desktop. WinXP is the upgraded version of Win2000, and is both faster and
more stable. (IMO it's best to avoid the XP Home version and pay extra to get
XP Pro for a stand-alone or workstation.)
