Can anybody explain the difference of these 4?
The #45 and #56 are pigmented black cartridges. The #45 delivers 42mL of black
ink, has 600 nozzles and is used in literally scores of printers. It was
introduced in ~ 1995 and has been a workhorse for black text for many of HP's
DeskJet, Photosmart and all-in-one units, as well as some large format
printers. The #45 list price is $29.99 USD.
The #56 cartridge was introduced in 2001. It delivers 19 mL of pigmented black
ink, has 416 nozzles and is used in the DeskJet 5xxx, Photosmart 7xxx, PSC
21xx, 22xx, 24xx and 25xx printers. The #56 has a list price of $19.99 USD.
Most printers that accept the #56 black cartridge are designed to swap this
cartridge with a #58 photo cartridge which provides six ink printing in these
printers. The #56 cartridge has drop sizes about 1/2 those of the #45
cartridge.
The #78 cartridge has 432 color nozzles and delivers a total of 19 mL of color
(cyan, magenta and yellow) ink for the 78D version with a list price of $34.99.
There is also a 78A cartridge that delivers 39mL with a list price of $54.99.
The #57 was introduced with the Photosmart 100 in 2000, and is also used in all
the printers that support the #56 cartridge. The #57 cartridge delivers 17 mL
of color ink and lists for $35.99 USD. The drop size for the #78 and #56
cartridges are similar at 5pL.
There are also the #58 photo and #59 grayscale photo cartridges that deliver
17mL each and a list price of $24.99. The 59 cartridge is used in the
Photosmart 245, 7260, 7760 and 7960 printers. When used with HP premium Plus
Photo paper the #57/58 cartridges give 72 years of lightfastness under glass,
or 49 years in open air.
