A workgroup is "every computer for itself". Each computer has it's own set
of configurations and user names/passwords (among other things).
A domain is a unified solution. All of the user names are stored on main
computers. All of the settings for the client computers are controlled by
the person in charge. It's easier for a business to use, but costly for a
home user to use, which is why at work we use domains but at home most of us
use workgroups
