Difference between template and global template

A Global Template is similar to any other templates but it is installed in
such a way as all its contents are available to all documents regardless of
their source templates. Global templates often contain macros, AutoText or
special Styles that must be available to all documents (and possibly all
users if on a network).

First, a template is a template. Regardless of whether it's a global
tempalte or a document template they are created and saved in the same
manner. The difference between them lies in how they are used in Word.

Global templates contain settings that are available to all documents
regardless of the template used to create the document. Your Normal
template, for example, is considered a global template. So if you have a
macro or AutoText/Building Block entry you want to use for any document it
needs to be placed in a global template.

In contrast, document templates, such as letterhead and those from Microsoft
Office Online, contain settings that are available only to documents based
on that template. When a document is based on a template, the template is
attached, or linked, to the document and the settings stored in the document
template are made available to the document through the link. So if you have
macros or AutoText/Building Blocks that are specific to a particular type of
document then they should be placed in a document template. Note that if
there are other open documents they cannot access the settings stored in
another document's template.

Document templates are used create new documents, provide default text and
layout, styles, macros, AutoText/Building Blocks, etc. A global template
does not provide text and layout or styles, but it provides all other
components. In order to use a template as a global template it is placed in
a Startup folder, either the Word Startup folder or Office\Startup folder,
so it automatically loads when Word starts.

To view a document's attached template or available global templates (with
the exception of the Normal template), go to Tools/Templates and Add-ins.
The document template will be listed at the top and global templates will
appear in the Global Templates and Add-ins list.

I'm fairly certain that styles stored in global templates are not available
to all documents.

True. I was thinking of THE global template (normal.dotx) and documents
opened from File New... Not the same :)
