There are two folder entries in my Folder Options > File Types.

near the very top of the list there is 'FOL' and also 'FOLDER'.

What is the difference?

"Fol" is no standard file type in Windows XP. It may come from a
third-party application.

That's strange because now that I have gone back to have another
look, the names of the entries have changed!

I have got "File Folder" (with no commands in it at all)
I have got "Folder" (with commands like explore and open in it).

However I know the names were definitely FOL and FOLDER because
that's where I got them from. Weird.

It happened after I installed an old version of Acdsee (version
3.1).

That is ok. "File Folder" is the type for each physical folder on the
HDD. "Folder" is used for special items which behave the like, but are
not file folders actually ("My Computer" for example).

I have had some unusual behavior when I open folders in Win Exp and
maybe this is the reason.

Can you or some other person help me out and tell me what actions
should be in each of "File Folder" and "Folder" in the File Types
list.

If I got to "Folder" and press the Advanced button I see four
actions:

explore
open
open with ACDSee
Switch User

and "confirm open after download" is checked.

I have no action entries in "File Folder".

Try...
Start
Run
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
Enter

My "Folder" has two actions:

explore
open

"confirm open after download" is checked.

My "File Folder" has three actions:

1 command prompt here
2 search
3 My Computer
