We have a client who runs 2000 server and terminal
services are installed. They have 4 handhelds that are
connecting to this server for connection for a pos
software program. We have created 4 different users in
the os and made them part of the administrators groups and
those logins are what each handheld uses to login to
terminal services. The software came with 5 cal's and
when we set up terminal services it only has a 90 day
limit to get licensed. Now the server is activated and
the question is can we not use the 5 cal's that came with
the os or do we have to purchase 5 terminal server cal's.
Need help on this one.....

Thanks.

CALs are issued on a concurrent basis to those computers
using resources provided by your Windows 2000 server. For
instance, if your server is sharing a drive, each
connecting computer will be issued a CAL.

However, using terminal services is different. Each
connecting device is assigned a TSCAL, and these TSCALs
are issued on a non-concurrent basis, meaning that once a
device is issued a license, that license is
considered 'used' and will not be given out to another
computer. If the client computer doesn't use that license
for 90 days, then the license will be returned to the free
license pool.

In your case, you need to purchase 5 TSCALs, as well as
being sure that the CALs that came with the system are
installed in the license manager.
