Any big difference between these two versions? I downloaded from MSDN, I
thought it is ultimate, after installation, showing business version.

Is there a way to choose which version to install or not?

Thanks,

It just depends on which product key you enter, I've not tried Business but
I think ultimate give you the added media center options.

Oh, Marty, you are a person after my own heart.

With the release of Vista 45 days away, you'd think there'd be at least ONE
Ultimate Extra available to whet folks appetite for spending $349 for an
upgrade of 1 computer. Ahem.

Anyway, back to the subject of this message, MS posted a complete Vista
Product Guide in the download center last month. You don't even have to
validate your current copy of Windows to get it (couldn't resist).

There are great charts in it comparing the features of all the versions.

Well, if that's doesn't work, just search for "Vista Product Guide" at the
Microsoft Download Center:

www.microsoft.com/downloads

P.S. You have two choices: A 61 mb file in Word 2007 format or a 25 mb XPS
file. Why Microsoft made life that difficult is one of those little
mysteries that keeps me on here at 1 am. :) There are links to appropriate
reading tools on the same page as the doc(x) xps lol

wow, thanks for the reply.

I am thinking how to upgrade from business to ultimate without re-install.

Thanks,

Good info Robert.

Thanks,
Marty

There will be an upgrade option when Vista comes out for the public at end
of January.
For right now, if you already have an Ultimate Key, best to reinstall.

Marty

When you request the Vista keys on MSDN you see keys for each of the four
editions. The key you put in determines the edition that gets installed.
All editions are installed from the same dvd. You must have put in the
Business key instead of the Ultimate key.

You cannot change the edition to Ulitmate by using the Change Product Key
button at the bottom of the System page. You must reinstall to change
editions.

When you first install, if you do not enter a key but leave the field blank
and select proceed you will get a drop down menu listing the four editions
and can choose the one you want. You can use the product that way for up to
30 days before it will lock up.

You can put in a key during the 30 days and continue using the product, but
do not put it in with the Change Product Key button at the bottom of the
System page. Instead, click on Activate and supply the key when requested.

Change Product Key only works after a key has already been entered and
activated.

You can upgrade from Win 2K Service Pack 4, XP Home, and XP Pro, and XP X64.
XP Pro 64 Bit only comes through Volume Licensing or OEM purchases of
course--at least legit purchases. Win 2K was only released as a 32 bit OS.
As Colin has stressed multiple times, you aren't going to be able to upgrade
cross platform or whatever term Colin likes better for this, i.e. you aren't
going from a 32 bit previous OS like Win 2K or Win XP to a 64 bit Vista.
This is not going to happen--at least via sales from Microsoft.

If you want to end up with 64 bit Vista, you are going to need a 64 bit CPU
and the only software you can upgrade from is 64 bit XP. You cannot start
with X86 and upgrade it to 64 bit Vista. You will be able to go from one
edition to a more expensive one with more features if you have 64 bit Vista.

MSFT has told me on Thursday December 14, 2006 that all edition changes will
be handled at the original source, not through their web site

Please Keep in mind the following obvious points:

You can upgrade from Win 2K Service Pack 4, XP Home, and XP Pro, (and both
must have SP2), and XP X64.

Colin has posted some minor changes in functionality with X64, and Office
2007 but I view those as temporary minor growing pains that will be fixed
quickly.
