Didn't anyone else notice no voice channel for 5 days?

As a new user of MSN Messenger, I couldn't figure out why a friend and
me could not connect voice (video OK). "Connecting with Donald" was
the message, but it didn't connect after a minute, and gave me the
message "Donald terminated voice contact" (something like that
anyway). We tried Fri, Sat, Sun, and maybe Mon & Tues.

I posted this info a little while ago. One other guy answered saying
he had the same problem. A couple of other answers, but nothing about
the voice channel itself

Well, my friend and I tried it one last time today (Fri feb 13).
*** We connected voice quite quickly. Can you believe it? The voice
server, or channel, must have been messed up. What other answer is
there?

But why-oh-why didn't anyone else notice?? No voice channel. For
maybe 5 days. I see no other posts about it.

There is no "voice server", voice communications are peer-to-peer and as such, the
"invitations" for voice conversations operate the same as text-messaging, and then you just
directly connect to your contact. There is no further infrastructure.

Also, just so you know, I've been having voice conversations everyday, this week and the
last, there's no magic server that went down, it's all peer-to-peer. There is no server, and
there is no "channel". The facts are, if you can't connect to your contact and they can't
connect to you, then it doesn't work. Firewalls, routers, etc. being the usual suspect.
More than likely either your contact or yourself somehow fixed whatever problem you were
experiencing, which is why it now works.

Very odd then. The only difference between us is that he uses Zone
Alarm, and I use the XP firewall. We both use Norton Anti-virus all
updated (me 2004, he 2003). before it tried for a minute I guess
before it aborted, then Friday when we tried it one last time before
giving up the voice channel connected in like 2 seconds. Nothing was
in any setting was changed by either of us. Perhaps the only thing
that had been changed was an update from Symantec (anti-virus).

I'll never know. But we've tried it several times now and it works
just great.

If there is no sever between us, then if I send/receive a file between
us, that means it isn't stored anywhere in between then? I have to
ask, because I thought a server worked between us, thus my assumptions
mentioned - this is what happened with Yahoo Messenger one time: we
tried a file transfer and he didn't get what I sent him, but he did
get a message saying to go <site address> and get the file. Which he
was able to do. Now you know why I assumed there was something in
between me and him using any Messenger program.
