I had a problem earlier with the blaster worm that this
newsgroup helped me solve. So I figured, while I'm
updating everything, I may as well use Windows Update to
automatically update my machine. The update told me that
I needed 29 critical updates with a size of 39 MB!!
(whew). I spent four hours downloading these critical
updates. The computer spent 20 minutes installing them.
I went back to the Windows update area, and it told that
I need 27 Critical updates with a size of 37MB! I feel
screwed here. How do I know what updates really got
installed? Why can't windows update see what got
installed? What happened with the nearly 40MB that I did
download? Can I use them? (rename them, etc). PLEASE
HELP!!

Maybe the patch installation failed. When there are many patches installed
same time, there might be problems. I don't think that Microsoft can test
all possible patch combinations that can be installed at same time. When I
use windowsupdate and there are many available patches, I select only few of
newest and install them first. Then after reboot I select some more and
reboot. That takes some time, but is safer than selecting all patches.

From windosupdate you can check which patches are installed. I also use
sometimes hfnetchk from www.shavlik.com. It scans your computer and tell
what paches are needed. You can then go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;KBJUMP and search
patches by patch number. You can download some of patches manyally and save
them for future use. That's good if you have slow internet connection and
don't want to reload same 40 MB patches again.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanx for your input. I'll
get the vasoline out and download this crap again.
Shouldn't there be a temp file in cache for what I
already downloaded? Is there a way to rename and
reinstall that file?

It's possible that I just wasted 12 hours of my life
downloading CRITICAL updates, because what did get loaded
(except the sp1) had to be unloaded because it was causing
internet connection problems, and with one unloaded would
mean that those other three may not work properly blah
blah blah.

How in the world does Microsoft stay in business? It has
to be the huge marketing machine, because the products
(95a, ME, XP home, IIS, explorer 4.0) do not work, are
unreliable or just plain rushed to market before
completion. I will NEVER sell a Microsoft network server
again. I am sticking with Novell. It works, it's
reliable, and it has never crashed a server by simply
installing a service patch. I could never tell a
customer "Yeah, you can put your entire business on this
microsoft platform and it will be there for you." Because
it WON'T!

I have worked on computers since 1985, and I have never
been so frustrated and disappointed as I am now. I rooted
for Bill Gates with his DOS. A true Cinderella story.
Now I pray some company can move in with a product that
works, reliably.

It's possible that some of the new patches were just fixes for things you
downloaded the first time. Maybe you downloaded a new component or a
service pack.
