My comp had 2000 Pro on it, Service Pack 3. I started
having svchost crash for no reason tonight, and i did a
virus scan, and it found nothing. So i searched google for
svchost crash and i read nothing that helped. So i tried
windows update, thinking security updates because i have
cable now. So i get service pack 4 thinking it might help.
It doesnt. so i think since im on cable and being hit, i
try zone alarm for the hell of it, and low and behold it
finds msblast.exe in /system/ trying to access the internet
at port 135, which will crash you (UDP) i read in a
critical update text. so i take it out of startup, and
remove it from memory, and delete it. voila, no more
problems with svchost crashing. so i finish doing my
windows updates, everything but IE6 (i like 5) and restart.
BAM, cant get online! so i think ok maybe its my modem...
so i restart into Redhat 9 (Kernel 2.4.20-19.9 - and/or
Kernel 2.4.20-8) and it works fine (cable).

My NIC in windows is working, driver is installed. TCP/IP
set to auto, IE is setup to detect LAN settings
automatically. what the hell did microsoft do to my
computer? plz email me asap.

My computer is running WS NT2K, and it has infected MSBLAST worm. I
followed the instructions to remove the msblast.com and the relevant
registry by regedit. The svchost error still keep coming back as soon
as I get online. I cannot download the fixed patch from MS as which
requires the SP2 or later patches, but the svchost problem prevent me
from downloading the patches. Anybody has a clue how to solve this
problem?

As the win2000(SP1) seem to have the same problem regarding
the svchost.exe error message by the W32.Blaster worm in common
....perhaps you can have someone D/L and burn the patch on a disc
for you. the microsoft patch, which does work!, will only work
for Win2000 SP2 and above, so...

How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;260910

(Windows 2000 service packs are for Windows 2000 Professional,
Windows 2000 Server, and Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
.... you do not have to install Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
before you install Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)

visit the above and it will have,
Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
Release date: June 26, 2003

(As well as)
Windows 2000 Service Pack 3, Release date: August 1, 2002
& Windows 2000 Service Pack 2, Release date: May 16, 2001 -- best to remember
lifecycle policy at microsoft!
PS, I would select the bigger download, SP4 Network Installation 129MB to
the SP4 Express Installation (faster) 588KB D/L considering the error message
always popping up between tasks, and it requires online install i think.
well it may or may not work depending on how badly the error message got to
your PC... It somehow worked for me :>
