I run my w2k prof updates at night due to the time
involved. Ran the latest updates, then next morning re-
booted the system, and now I can dial-out to my ISP but
cannot get anything from the internet. Outlook cannot
download email. When I open IE and try to go to any site,
I get 'Cannot open page, check Tools + Options etc.' just
as if I were not dialed in and connected. This is NOT an
404 error

I have reset all of my options and even spent an hour with
my ISP trying various configurations, repairing of IE and
still, I can't get anywhere.

Have talked Microsoft and was told that since this was a
factory loaded software, I had to talk with Dell. Which I
did, and all that they could tell me was to wipe it out
and re-install.

This doesn't sound like something that I want to do, since
the system runs fine and the other applications load and
function as usual.

The problem all started when I downloaded the recent
service paks directly from Microsoft and it doesn't seem
fair that there is no support from the source that
recommended the download & update, and the update created
the problem.

Please help. Thank you.

cant help you, unfortunately. although i do agree with you
100%. this is total bullshit. and furthermore, getting
help from dell is ridiculous. i spoke with maheesh,
babaseyed and about 10 other individuals who barely spoke
english for support. next system will have support in the
states.
this is my problem, although after reading your problem, i
will take my chances on the blaster before taking my
problem any further: good luck

[[[[went through a long process and series of updates to
protect against blaster and other infections. was told
that was all updated. then, for kicks, i went to the
update history page and found that service pack 4 install
failed.

more importantly, i was told the following:

"Important Note: Do not install security update MS03-026
before installing SP4. The security update must be applied
after SP4 has been installed on computers. Once you have
successfully installed SP4, you should then install MS03-
026, which protects against vulnerabilities caused by the
Blaster worm. For more information about the Blaster worm,
see What You Should Know About the Blaster Worm and Its
Variants."

according to the history page, MS03-026 is installed,
without the SP4. now what?? uninstall MS03-026, then
reinstall SP4?? just install SP4, or will this be in the
wrong order? any suggestions would be appreciated. am i
protected from the blaster at this point?

thanks,

Is your modem dialing? Can you hear it?

The modem does dial and connect. I can use the hyper-
terminal and connect to my ISP so we know that the modem
is working.

Hi Bushy

Recently, the MS03-026 Security Bulletin Page has been updated. The
following Information has been added:

"V1.4 (August 12, 2003): Updated to include information about Windows 2000
Service Pack 2 support for this patch and updated bulletin with additonal
workaround information."

and

"The Windows 2000 patch can be installed on systems running Windows 2000
Service Pack 2, Service Pack 3, or Service Pack 4."

For more information, please head to:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp

There, expand the Link 'Additional information about this patch' to obtain
even more Info.

If you are unure if you really have installed this Patch then you can
download a Utility from MS which verifies if this specific Security Update
is installed. To get this free Utility go here:

- "MS03-026 Scanning Tool for Network Administrators:"

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6c-b71b-4992-91f1-aaa785e709da&DisplayLang=en
(<300 KB)

For instructions on how to use this tool go here:

- "How to Use the KB 823980 Scanning Tool to Identify Host Computers That Do
Not Have the 823980 Security Patch (MS03-026) Installed":

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826369

Alternatively, you can get the free Retina RPC DCOM Vulnerability Scanner
from eEye Digital Security (you need to provide a valid Email address to
download it).

http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Tools/RPCDCOM.html

To learn everything about the MS Blaster Worm and how to protect yourself,
go to: http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp

Hope this helps. Regards,

Fabio
