We Live For The One We Die For The One

Did they decide it was JUST TOOOOOOOOOO HARD ?

They seemed to **** up that design pretty good.

More that there was bugger all money in it.

Yep, and with very thin margins on mass market commodity
drives, it was easier to find some sucker to buy that operation.

As someone else said, the profit margins on retail disk drives are
very thin, I assume IBM calculated that they could make more money by
selling off the line and getting royalty income. IBM has lots of
patents on disk drive technology, I assume they get revenue from just
about everyone that makes them.

IBM has demonstrated some very high density solid state parts that
they say will replace rotating magnetic storage, big time. One could
imagine that IBM sold off the current factories to Hitachi to free up
capital and other resources to bring the new stuff to market. They
they wouldn't be stuck with factories making the old technology as
they promote the new stuff.

I read about the new storage technology a few months ago. I know that
stuff is demonstrated all the time that takes many years to come to
market, or never does (remember bubble memory?) I also know that
people have been forcasting the death of disk drives for 30 years, but
this demo sounded like late development, and IBM sold off it's disk
drive division shortly afterwords.
