Did I buy the wrong printer?

I recently bought the Epson RX500 to replace my Lexmark X73. I liked
the
features of the Epson such as the high resolution scanner, the built-in
slide scanner, the photo capabilities, and it's 3 in 1 abilities. Also,
I own an Epson LQ 500 which seems to have more lives than the Eveready
Batteries. However, I am finding out that it's not cheap to enjoy all
this, as replacing the six cartridges can be expensive. Refilling seems
to be discouraged by Epson with their built in chip monitors. I read
about the chip resetters, but am concerned that this is only a gimmick.
I was told by Epson that even if one color cartridge empties, the
printer
will not allow any further printing (black or color). Seems like they
did
this on purpose to generate more revenue. I also read where it is
difficult to refill the OEM cartridges, so it is recommended to buy
special refillable cartridges (another unnecessary expense).

Maybe I should have bought an equivalent Canon?

Ok - here we go...

Firstly, with six seprate cartridges you'll rarely need to replace more than
a single cartridge at the same time, and they do carry a reasonable quantity
of ink. All manufacturers discourage re-filling their cartridges and their
are genuine reasons for this, however there are also some fine replacement
ink kits availalbe (avoid the one ink fill all kits tho), and it is possible
(necessary) to get a small device that resets the chip.

Go to MIS (www.inksupply.com) Lots of good info on refilling, empty
carts, etc.

Yes, printer companies make lots of money on ink, but there is a
reason for warning you early---you do NOT want the ink to run dry.
One of the many reasons that you save money refilling is you keep the
ink that is left when the counter says empty.

There are now many sources of good 3rd party ink. I am using MIS
stuff in two different Epsons. It all works--including the chip
resetter.

Hi Mark,
I don't know what model Epson you have, but my RX500 only has one USB
port on it, no parallel ports. Seems like the chip resetter at MIS
requires
an additional parallel port to hook up to. Don't think this will work
for me.

The chip resetter works on the cartridge--it has nothing to do with
parallel ports, etc.---unless your printer is a totally different
design than its forebears.

If MIS offers a resetter for your printer, then it will work

try also ColorBat

Thanks for the replies to my RX500 question. I have checked out the
sources given for the ink kits and cartridge resetter's. All of the
sources mentioned, including MIS, do not include the RX500 for their
inks or resetters. Is there a lag time on new products, and if so, how
long do
I have to wait to see support for this printer appear? I am nervous
about buying these things if they don't specifically mention my model
Epson.
