Dictionary in Mail

The spell checker in Mail appears to be using a "US" English dictionary. How
can I replace this with an "English" English dictionary?

You can't.

You can't. You can edit the UserDictionary.lex file in the message store
and add words such as colour.

You might be able to find a real list of English words on the web
otherwise you have to "train" it or edit the dictionary list,
both of which are long and painful austerities.

To edit or replace the list...

Open this file in Notepad and edit it:

C:\Users\*YourName*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\UserDictionary.lex

If the OP can hold on a bit longer, Microsoft is scheduled to release
a beta of Windows Live Mail within the next 10 days, which is supposed
to have support for 39 languages.

I don't think one can replace words in US EN such as "color".

That's where the "training" comes in.
By taking the "add" option rather than change or ignore,
the spell checker gradually gets less intrusive even if
it'll never achieve full accuracy.

The problem arises when the UK EN people use the word color and it should be
corrected to colour. There is no way to amend that.

But if "color" was replaced in the dictionary by "colour" it would work.
Surely?

OK... That's wrong.
I now realise that the User dictionary is concatenated above the
base dictionary and thus words are just added.

right. And there isn't a file with a list of words that you can delete
from.
