Although I am a fairly good speller, I use TinySpell ...it runs
constantly.
http://www.megspace.com/computers/tinyspell/
It monitors your keyboard input, no matter where you are typing, and
notifys you of mistakes...either by visual color change, by a sound,
or both....then you look at its suggested alternates, click one, and
your choice is fixed automatically. You can add to its database.

Can anyone tell me why my Mozilla 1.7.1 browser using win98SE would freeze
on this site (and others) forcing a complete shutdawn/reboot?.It doesn't
happen using IE5.
I'm guessing something to do with java script but not sure, the "lake
applet" forces a reboot too. I am going to see if anyone here knows
something about it or, barring that, I going back to good old netscrape

"How can you look up a word in the dictionary if you don’t know how to
spell it?" GOOD QUESTION!!

I use a couple spellers that aren't bad but I, like you, would like one like
a little Franklin hand speller I had that figured it out phonically. Spell
it like it sounds and it would figure it out. None that I have seen for
computers do that .

Bill, do you find that you miss the icon color change when you
misspell a word and then later when you see it you don't know which
one is incorrect? I guess having the sound on would be better. Sounds
like a good spell checker though.

Fredal's Dictionary is a very different and special kind of Desktop
Dictionary (American-English). It is a reincarnation of the Jorj
Shareware Dictionary (Jorj Software Co.), a TSR/DOS program and the
original Phonetic Dictionary. Because the program is very intuitive and
easy to use, the only instructions provided are the notes included in
the program itself. These notes can be viewed from the "About" box which
is accessed from the menu displayed when the Title bar Icon is clicked.
The menu is also displayed by right-clicking the Title bar itself.

A dictionary is always a "work-in-progress" and Fredal's Dictionary is
updated on a fairly regular basis. Fredal's Dictionary is a great
reference tool to have available while creating text documents when not
on-line. This dictionary has been specifically designed as a
computer-based reference and is unique in that it is the only phonetic
dictionary and also one that permits searches of the definitions in its
database, which greatly enhances its usefulness.

Best Regards,
George Fredal

I have noticed that GOOGLE (of all things) does that very well. If you have
your auto-search set to google, you already have a pretty good built-in
dictionary. Googling "fonetic" returns "phonetic" Try it!

Another approach for those who have browsers with "aliases", it's just too
easy. For example, on my browser, the alias for Websters-online dictionary
is "d fonetic", and returns:

Full alias http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/search?=%s&R1=en

URL http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definition/fonetic

"phonetic, phonetically, phonographic"

All that's very interesting, but the OP was looking for a freeware
program which does Phonetic Spelling not an online service to do the
same.

Thank you. I found your comments interesting too.

I also thank you for the reminder of what the OP was looking for, but I
didn't need it.

AFAIK, there is no Freeware phonetic spell checker, so I was giving the OP a
"last resort" option in case nothing else worked for him. Is that OK with
you?

I am not a great speller, but since I have a T1 at work and broadband
(cable) at home, I just go to Google. It has saved me more than once
;).

yes...I sometimes do miss the color change when I am in a hurry...but
it does allow you to open a very small window with the current word
displayed. This window can be positioned anywhere you wish, so it is
much harder ti miss. The sound can be distracting to my wife, who is a
MUCH faster typist than I ...but she can turn it off.

I have been there many times...no problems....I have had odd browser
crashes at a site, and when I went back, it was fine. It 'may' have
been just a coincidence not 'caused' by the site.

You're quite Welcome, always happy to help another ACFer.

Initially I thought that too, after doing a quick search, but a few have
revealed themselves with additional search parameters.

That's one of the ones I have but it doesn't hold a candle to the little
hand one I refered to.
