I'm using XP Prof with SP2. Automatic updates are currently set to automatic,
which I want to turn off. Despite being logged in as an admin, every time I
open the security settings window, the options for automatic or non-automatic
are all grey and unselectable. Am I missing something obvious?

Hello,

Try any of the fixes here:

Hello,
This is the procedure I follow.
start - control panel - administration tools - double click services - right
click on automatiic updates - open properties - general tab, startup type,
click down arrow and highlight disabled then click apply and then click on
stop and OK.
Check on B.I.T.S. (Background Intell. Transfer Service) set this to manual
and stop.
Reverse process when needed, ie: updates and some Microsoft downloads that
need auto updates in order to download.
take care,
beamish.
