I would like a diary which would pop up now and again to remind me of things
I need to do on a particular day.

Is there such a thing available in Windows XP?

No. However there are many choices of programs to do that, both from
Microsoft and from third-party vendors. Personally I use Microsoft Outlook,
which has this among its many capabilities.

Aside of what others suggested already, you can use Task Manager to open
whatever text files you write as you diary... might be too tedious and w/
less options when compared w/ Sticky Notes or others, though.

Ctrl-Alt-Delete

Also you can right click a blank spot on the Taskbar and select Task
Manager.

CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is the fastest way I know how to do it.
