Diamondmax D540X-4K slightly louder than an FA-18 jet engine?

I think it's just getting old, it's been on for perhaps 2 years now -
it's just SOOO Loud, I'd put it about the same sound level as a 40cm
fan on full speed (not quite the same sound type of course but it's
very loud in its own way).

I was going to replace it and retire it but I don't want to just yet,
I was hoping to find some way to insulate it acoustically inside the
case without risking overheating - that might be a bit of an ask
though, any thoughts on what could be done there?

For a while Maxtor was making the same drives with ball bearings and
fluid dynamic bearings--if yours has ball bearings then the noise is not
surprising.

The "Smart Drive" enclosure should help (note--that is different from
the "Silent Drive" enclosure). It's available from
<http://www.endpcnoise.com>, <http://www.directron.com>, and
<http://www.siliconacoustics.com> among others, but the price, about
$60, is about the same as a newer quieter larger drive so it may not be
the best option. You can also check the forums

I've one of these beasties in a system of mine, the 40 gig version.
Its rotational noise makes neighbours think that I'm testing fighter
aircraft engines in my apartment - I can hardly hear the seek of the
heads as the rotational noise is -SO- loud.

Are there any suggestions that anyone might have as to how I can
quieten this drive down a tad? Any sound dampening techniques that
won't build up heat too much (the drive never seems to generate much
heat, it's only a 5400rpm drive).

Thanks

DT

Are you sure it's not defective? This is one of the quietest drives in
existence. You shouldn't be able to hear anything unless you're up close.
