Dialup speaker volume gone

For no apparent reason I no longer am getting sound from my dial up
modem. Have tried a new modem with different drivers, Put back on a
HD image from two years ago and the modem's speaker worked just fine.
I only use the dial up to send faxes but it's nice to monitor the
call's progress. Have applied MS fixes and updates along the way.
Configuration has remained the same - L3 in the initial string and
volume sliding bar set to full. Also have "enable modem speaker"
check box checked. Any suggestions appreciated.

Check you have'nt any spyware/trojan/diallers on your system. Often
these disable the speaker so that they can dial premium rate connections
without users noticing
