In my XP, and I am sure in all other versions as well, it has become
common that the dialup is being triggered by some functio n in the
computer (Thinkpad T43). Not that I have DSL, I don't need it, but, and
even in tmmes before, I have had dialup only, something triggers an
automatic, dialup sequence. Is it my browser? an attempt at update? A
worm? WHAT? Ther are no buttons of any sort I can find anywhere to stop
this action.

HOW DO I STOP THIS PEST???

Hi
In Internet explorer pull down the Tool menu choose the last entry, Internet
Options.
In Internet Option choose the connection Tab and check the Never Dial A
connection entry.
Jack (MVP-Networking).

Could be malware. You may know that malware dialers were so popular
for doing this. I recommend to scan your system with a spyware like
SpyBot S&D and hijackThis.

Hijackthis is not a spyware scanner and should not be used by the uninformed
without some guidance.

They are both incorrect I quote from Trend Micro;

"HijackThis is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to
find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other
unwanted programs.IMPORTANT: HijackThis does not determine what is good or
bad. Do not make any changes to your computer settings unless you are an
expert computer user."

It finds altered settings and such, it does not scan for spyware itself, and
you can royally screw your system if you don't know what your doing with it.
The average user will have absolutely no clue what this software is showing
them after a scan.
