Hi there,
Can a dialup 56K modem be responsible for ultra-slow upload/download
problems?
I believe it's a WinModem

My Dept. IS guys says no, it's because of telnet limits of 28-20kps.

Thanks
Carl

Uh, Telnet? That is a terminal emulator. Uploads and downloads are done with
FTP (ignoring HTTP, UUCP and the like for the time being). I wasn't aware
that Telnet (and HTTP, FTP, UUCP, et al) had speed limitations other than
that imposed by the media it ran across.

Modems have limitations. A 56K modem will achieve 56K only in laboratory
settings. In the real world, a 48.8K connection is considered respectable.

A WinModem definitely imposes a penalty, especially if you are running a
lower-end processor and/or you're choked on physical memory. The more tasked
the processor and physical memory, the worst the performance. WinModems
depend heavily on the computer to do all the real work - the modem itself
only handles the telco side of the equation. (Okay, I'm oversimplifying.
Resist flaming, please.)

Your dept IT guy is spoofing you. Telnet and ftp are above the layer that
worries about transmission speeds. A performance issue can be due to a lot
of things such as overloaded servers bad connections etc. 56 k dialup
usually runs at 45 -46 bps rarely 48. WIn modems tend to make it even worse
especially on slow processors. A real hardware modem costs about $75 about 3
times the price of a winmodem.

Not sure of brand modem, but I am told it is 56K

Get sisoft sandra for info on modem but you should be okay with a 350 mhz as
long as your not doing anything intensive.

If I remember rightly Zdnet and 3com have throughput testers. I wouldn't
want to bet my life or even my money on their accuracy but they may give you
a feel for what's happening. My guess is you're short on cycles. I run a
1.2 gig unturned duron with 768 MB and a 56k PCI bus modem the best I get is
48bps usually its 45 or 46bps.
