Can anyone help me?

I have been used to connecting and disconnecting automatically on
Broadband but, in one location I am having to use mt Laptop to access
the Internet by a dial up connection.

I am having two annoying problems

1. The dial up screen shows immediately I switch on the computer. How
can I restrict this to just when I want to use it?

2. How do I disconnect within XP other than switching off the computer
or pulling out the phone lead?

Sorry these seem trifling questions but I just cannot find an answer.

Thanks in anticipation

Modem Automatically Attempts to Establish a Dial-Up Connection When You Start Your
Computer or Start a Program

In IE, Tools>Internet Options>Connections.
Highlight the connection and click Settings.
In Dial-up Settings click Advanced and check the box next to
"Disconnect when Connection may no longer be needed".
"Disconnect if idle for ... mins"

Or if you have "show icon in notification area when connected" you can right click on
that and disconnect.

Fred
Click on "control panel" then 'network and internet connections' then 'set
up or change my internet connections'. Under the tab 'connections' chose
'never dial a connection' and click OK. Hope this fixes your problem
