Can connect and authenticate, but cannot
browse network unless NetBEUI is enabled-can't
see network resources on TCP/IP alone.

Dialing into a NT4 workstation via modem on a
W2K laptop.

I would like to get this to work on TCP/IP
only, as I'd also like to be able to use my PPC
running WM2k3 to dial in as well.

Thanks for any help.

Thx. for the response, Bill.

I had already tried that-
no joy.

I can ping the remote NT box both by IP
and name, but no network browsing.

"The list of servers for this workgroup
is not currently available"

I can see, from the modem icon in the SysTray,
that no data is outbound when I try to browse...

If I try a \\NET VIEW <remote machine>
I get:

System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.

Doesn't make too much sense, as I can connect
fine as long as NetBEUI is concurrently running...
so the user/password's gotta be right.

OK, stayed up late last nite, playing with this.

Learned a few relevant things (well, mostly one).

After I connect and authenticate, I can get to network
resources one at a time IF I open up a command prompt and issue
a NET USE \\server\sharnename command. My NT based
boxes then require a password, as expected, my 95/98
boxes don't, also as expected.

So, this is perhaps looking like an inherited credentials
issue.

I'm still kinda dead in the water tho, as my PPC doesn't
support NET USE without third-party software, which I'm trying
to avoid.

Any input appreciated...

The dialup connection doesn't carry LAN broadcasts, so you need some way
to resolve names to IP numbers.

Try adding an LMHOSTS file to the client with an entry for the "server"
machine's name and IP address.

I doubt that you will be able to get LAN browsing working connecting to a
Pro machine unless you have a domain structure and WINS. If you monitor the
traffic, you will probably find that the client is trying to find a domain
master browser, by sending a name server request for <domainname 1b>.
If you have a domain setup and WINS running, this gives the client the IP
address of the master browser, and it gets a browse list.
