Dial-up remote access

I have an XP Home laptop dialling in to an XP Pro laptop, (but specifically not trying to use Remote Assistance or Remote Desktop), all I want to do is access shared folders & printers. Whilst making the connection is successful, once connected, I can't view any shared folders on Host (Pro) laptop. When I look under My Network Places, all I get is the name of the Workgroup I created (on both laptops), but no folders & I can't map the shares either. I have run the Network Connection Wizard on both laptops, & the shares all appear to be set up correctly. Is what I'm trying to do actually possible under XP, it certainly was under Win98.

Tried both those pages, turning off Simple File Sharing didn't make any difference. The odd thing is, from the host laptop, I can ping both host & client IP address, but from the Client laptop, I can't ping the host, so presumably until I get that working, I'm not going to be able to see any shared files. I emailed Microsoft, who said you can't do basic file sharing via dial-up access & recommended using PCAnywhere. Seems a bit sad when it was possible to do this with Win98. Any other ideas

Are you getting a valid IP Address assigned (i.e., not one in the
169.x.x.x range)?

Also, do you have the firewall turned on on the host machine?
