Hundreds. It's wise to search the group before posting, if it doesn't
shut you down first. ^ "RPC" and "remote" will reveal tips and links, to
rid your PC of this worm. One of those links is...

Apparently, your computer is infected with the W32.Blaster.Worm or one of its variants.
This happened because you have not been using an internet connection firewall and have
apparently neglected to install the critical updates available at the Windows Update website.

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

A tool is available to remove Blaster worm and Nachi worm infections from computers
that are running Windows 2000 or Windows XP

This is a Blaster infection. See the following articles:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/blast.asp
http://www.newtechhelp.com/virus/blaster-welchia/index.htm
http://www.sophos.com/support/disinfection/blastera.html

The next time the shutdown starts, go immediately to a command box,
and type "shutdown -a". This will abort the shutdown in progress.

Now, do in this sequence:
1) Disconnect your computer from the network immediately. You are
infecting others as you read this.
2) Protect yourself. Install a software firewall or get a NAT router
for protection.
3) Remove the infection. See the above articles for instructions.
4) Connect to the internet.
5) Update your system. Install MS03-039 first for protection.
6) Install and update your virus protection.

Please do not connect to the internet until you perform step 3.

Cheers,

Chuck

Its not the fault of the vendors. Except that the instructions for
any new computer should say:
1) DO NOT connect this computer to the internet until you have
connected it behind a NAT router or other firewall, enabled ICF, and /
or installed another software firewall.
2) In case of doubt, refer to rule 1.

Now get a NAT router, install a software firewall, or enable ICF.
Please. You're part of the problem, as you are distributing the crap
as long as you're connected and infected.

Thank yourself. If you didn't choose to go onto the internet you would have
been safe. Not Sony's fault! Yours!
