I have been using WinXP for several months on a 2 year old
Dell Dimension (600mhz) desktop machine. Early last week
the system lost all of the dial up connections and
the "connect to" menu selection has disappeared. Since I
use CompuServe as my ISP, I have had to set up connections
manually. Surprisingly, the loss of these connections, I
also lost the ability to manually setup a dial up
connection using the connection setup wizard. The menu
only allows entry in one of the 3 menu selections under
the manual setup portion of the wizard and that is for
cable or DSL setup where the connection is always on, not
dial up.
To solve this problem I have reinstalled WinXP twice and
checked the status of the modem. The modem is fine and
responding to WinXP. The reinstallations have not
restored the ability to manually setup a dial up
connection. So, the system is essentially unable to make a
network connection and I am posting this message from my
laptop.
Any suggestions?
