Dial-Up Connections and New Connection Wizard do not work.

I am running Windows XP Pro with all the latest patches
and upgrades. I was currently downloading the latest
windows updates but due to having dial-up I was
downloading a little each time I got online. I was to
about 45% of downloading but now when I click on the dial-
up networking icons I get a quick hour glass then nothing
else happens (I checked the task manager and it is not
showing as running). If I right click on the icon and
choose properties nothing happens on the Dial-up
connection but I do get properties on my network card
connection. If I try to use the New Network Connection
Wizard I can get to where I choose what kind of
connection I want but after choosing any of the options
and click the next button it does not advance. I have up
to date virus program and scanned all drives, I have ran
tools to ensure I have none of the new worms. The only
change has been I was downloading the windows update
piece by piece. Hopefully someone has an answer before
I just re-format and start from scratch..lol

I could dial out using hyper terminal...did not try
rasphone.exe I will try that when I get home...

I was able to connect with rasphone.exe. I choose my
connection it brought up the normal window for starting
the connection process. Once connected it did not give
me the network icon in my notification area. Do I need
to reinstall Dial-up networking?

Ken,

That did not work but now I know where the problem
started. I installed a game a bought in the store
called "Pacific Gunner" on my laptop last night and now
it is doing the same thing as my home computer. I am not
sure what is up with this but I cannot find anything
about this problem at their website...

There's no real way to reinstall dial up networking on XP like there was in
Win9x.

I haven't heard of this problem before but let's try a generic fix.

Try running "regsvr32 %windir%\system32\netshell.dll".

I am off on business I will try this as soon as I get
home on Friday...

I'm not familiar with that game but I have seen instance where software will
unregister various interfaces.

Try this one, and reboot after you have run it.

"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\ole32.dll"

regsvr32 on all dlls starting with net and all dlls
starting with ole32..no luck. Any other advice.. Can I
repair my installation of XP pro? I know if I boot off
the cd I get a repair option but it just takes me to a
command prompt..

Thanks

There should be a repair option as you've said, but I have never used it.
Maybe someone else here can comment.
