I would like to know if there is a freeware programme,
similar to scandisk. I have windows XP home version, and
there seems to be no programme to scan and repair faults.
Can anyone help.

Scandisk was a solution to inferiority of FAT filesystems.
Your disk drive should be an NTFS filesystem. You should
verify this. NTFS filesystems are self-healing. If an NTFS
filesystem need be repaired, then XP (a Windows NT based OS)
automatically executes CHKDSK. Those other procedures, for
example, clean up messes left by defective programs, eliminate
excessive files from internet access, and defragment the
disk. You need not Scandisk a properly designed NTFS
filesystem - that existed before even FAT32 was created for
the obsolete Windows 9x based OSes.
