OK here is what happened,

foolishly entered diagnostic startup in msconfig for
WindowsXP home edition. After rebooting windows, it had
changed some of the display themes that were set up,
Almost no drivers were there, device manager is blank, no
network connections found, I think that was most of it.

Went back to msconfig and selected Normal startup....

Everything is the same as in Diagnostic startup, went back
to msconfig to confirm startup mode, it is at Normal.
Racking my brain cant figure it out!!!

HP wants me to reformat my HD and I laughed at the idiot
on the phone, "your kidding" I say... This was after him
hearing only a 1/4 of the problems "Thats the only option"
he says" "Are you out of your mind?" I ask....

PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!

oh ya...in event viewier under applications there are lots
of these:
The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the
subscribers partition:{41e90f3e-56c1-4633-81c3-
6e8bac8bdd70!new:{D3938AB0-5B9D-11D1-8DD2-00AA004ABD5E}.
CoGetObject returned HRESULT 80070422.

and in Systems there are lots of these:
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either
because it is disabled or because it has no enabled
devices associated with it. " attempting to start the
service wuauserv with arguments "" in order to run the
server:

hope that helps

Well, I would say that your options may be fairly limited. I would suggest a
repair installation, but I don't think HP's recovery system supports it.
Have you tried a System Restore yet? From the sounds of it, parts of the
original installation registry were corrupt.

Try tu run a few registry fix utilities - there's plenty of them on the web,
each doing part of the job. Old RegClean might help, too. Then do a chkdsk
/f then a dfrag.

If you still have problems, try to open a new user account and see where you
are. If it works the way you want, you can delete your old account.
