You need scope option 015 "DNS Domain name" so DHCP knows what Forward
Lookup Zone to update. Have you enabled that scope option?

Yes, I do.
If the zone is AD integrated and set to "Allow only secure updates" then you
need to add the machine account DHCP is running on to the DnsUpdateProxy
Group.

Sorry, but it is not in a AD yet, I'm still in a nt 4
domain, I wanted to be sure DDNS was in place and working
prior to upgrading my nt4 DC, was I premature in starting
DDNS?

Stating the obvious, but make sure that dynamic updates is set to "Yes" on the forward lookup zone.

Thank you,

NT4 does not support DDNS

A little premature, as was stated that NT4 does not support this with static
IPs.

Be sure to set the Primary DNS Suffix on an NT4 box prior to upgrading it.
That is in it's TCPIP properties, DNS tab. State the domain name that you
planned for the NT4 PDC upgrade. It should be in the form of domain.com and
not just "domain" or you'll have mutliple new errors.
