My neighbour has just asked me to help him instal broadband on a system he has bought secondhand..its a crap system but he paid £80 for it...It passes the 4 criteria for the broadband setup ie
operating system,memory etc

Now heres the problem he is running windows 98 and when the NTL software trys to configure the computer he gets this message

Broadband setup CD encountered an error while configuring your network adaptor for DHCP
To try again , Click retry
any suggestions ...The Broadband has only today been installed

Is it Win98 second edition? It might be worth removing all of the network adapter drivers and TCP/IP devices from the control panel, and re-starting to let windows re-detect them. I used to have no end of problems with Win 98 and things like this, so be prepared for a battle!

Techy is your man for DHCP and networking, but I think that is for Win200x series - he might have some ideas for 98 though if he reads this.

I thought it was the drivers ..tried to tell him to upgrade to XP but the HDD is only 10GB far too low , will go back and try that Ian ..cheers

oh come on now, you been here long enough to know we NEED DETAILS

What modem?

What NIC card

... and any other relevant info please.

Sorry Mucks :p

Ok.. The machine is
1 second hand ..it seems to be a HP bought system
2 the OS is Win 98 S/E
3 He does not have the operating disk
4 the NIC is a..
Telepermit internal PCI modem
PTC 211/99/200

I really did think about telling him to scrap it and format and do a XP home install but thats costs and his HDD is only 10.? GB .

i get as far as the error message then am stuck ..sorry the modem is a NTL one ..didnt take or get Model no

No need to scrap it ... just get a "real" PCI NIC ... and take the "modem" out :thumb:

And you think that 'thing' will run XP OK? ... like it has 512mb min ram in it? :p
