DHCP offer packet using an actual IP for the destination IP address.

Should the DHCP offer packet ever have as it's destination IP the IP address
being offered in the packet? I always thought the destination IP should be
255.255.255.255 for the DHCP offer packet. My cable internet started sending
DHCP offers with the destination IP as the IP being offered, which is
ignored by my computer becuase it doesn't actually have an IP yet when it
makes the DHCP discover request. Any idea what is going on here. I ended up
just adding a static IP.

Thanks!

Bob

What are you talking about Bigman? I never mentioed I was trying to find my
subnet mask. Is that what you are referring to?

DHCP renewals always happen at 50% of the lease period, so the machine does
actually have an IP. Also a client will always request the IP# that is last
had until it is denied that address.

Not if you do a ipconfig /release or you computer is rebooted. That's what
happened in my case and besides, during an IP renewal there is just a DHCP
request and an ACK, there is no DHCP Discover and Offer.
