DHCP nightmare finally over...

Howdy,

After nearly two weeks of unpleasant effort, we have
resolved an unusual networking problem.

We had two wireless routers on one lan but only one of them
had DHCP enabled. The other was used as a wireless switch
only (rather than a router.)

All was well, until we had a power outage. With that, the
wireless switch was reset, and defaulted to its original
DHCP enabled status.

I won't detail the difficulties this caused...

And so, this question:

We would like to have wireless switch functionality but I am
aware only of wireless routers (that is, with DHCP.)

Might you suggest a wireless switch?

I think what you're looking for is called an "access point".
Google should take if from there...

What you are asking for is a Wireless Access Point (WAP). Beware,..the
SOHO market has totally butched terminology with thier products. What they
call a "router" is really a "NAT firewall",...just a lightwiehgt version of
the same thing we call "Firewalls" that cost $3000. Sometimes what they
call a Wireless Access Point is really *also* a NAT Device (same thing they
usually call "router"). Buyer beware,...investigate what you are getting
before you buy it.

I agree. This terminology butchering is a pain. And then there is that
"modem" word! LOL! Sheesh!

Yes. Terminology is one of my biggest "bandwagons" to get on. I'm like the
"English Teacher from Hell" when it comes to that stuff, but it is a loosing
battle, even though I'll probably still never give up.

And then,...don't even get me started on these ;-)

"forwarding a port" (or "port forwarding")
"forwarding an IP" (or IP Forwarding)
"open a port"
