I have a laptop where i can manually assign IP settings and everything works
fine, but when i try to renew via dhcp, nothing happens. i have the dhcp
client started in services, and when i plug ANY other computer into that
network jack, it gets an IP without a problem INSTANTLY.

i've run into a similar problem with a printer where any computer you connect
to this network jack works fine, but the printer couldn't even get a link...i
solved it by rerunning a cable and everything was fine, but i'm not so sure
it's the cable this time.

anybody seen this before?

Put a Netmonitor on the line and watch the request.

Occasionally a bad net cable or a funky hub will cause
such weird problems.

Surprising often a bad network cable (or even a hub itself is at fault.)

I would suspect that the network card or drivers are in need or
updating/replacement.

I've seen similar problems, normally caused by port speed on a switch. If
you're using a switch or single speed hub, it may be that the printer's NIC
speed is not compatible with current port seettings on the hub/switch. Most
machines will auto-negotiate OK, but some just won't... especially printers.
Several older printers only work at 10Mbps, or some I've seen, even at
100Mbps Half Duplex only. Printer boards seem much worse at auto-negotiating
than PCs.

Try setting the switch port to different speed settings ?
