DHCP basic question - turning on scope of same range?

Hi,

I have an office where the DHCP services are provided by
the router. I have configured a DHCP scope of the same IP
range on a W2K server and would like to simply shut off
DHCP at the router and turn DHCP on at the W2K server.

Will this work? Or will it cause IP collisions? Thanks
for any advice!

The only issue with this is that the W2K device will not know what addresses
have already been leased. This means that when someone requests a lease,
they may get NACK'd because someone on the network already has the address.
This just means that the client will try to get another address. It would
be a good idea after the change to have the clients release and renew their
addresses.

It think it should be fine. The Clients always request the same number they
currently have and it is included in the request, so the Server should know
what they currently use and either accept it or deny it and grant a new one.
There might be a few extra seconds involved the first time around but it
should work. I've juggled DHCP Servers around here a few times and I only
got a few duplicate address errors on rare occasions and it usually cleared
itself up fairly quick.

Now that I think about it,...I believe I also shortened the lease time up to
be very short lease and gave it time to update on the clients before I did
this. That would have helped the Clients do their own "release/renew" fairly
quickly. Then set the lease back to the normal duration later.
