I have seen references to this problem, and have tried all of the
suggestions given, but none seem to resolve my problem.
I have a simple Win2K system - PDC, server, wkstations - with DHCP,
DNS and WINS services running on the PDC. This network is connected to
the internet by a DSL router. All of that works fine. Then I added a
wireless router for access to this network by roaming laptops. This
all works fine as well - except for DHCP. Once I (somehow) manage to
get an IP assigned, if the laptop suspends itself, then when it
resumes, it can't get another IP from DHCP. IPconfig/renew returns
with "DHCP server unreachable", and the event log says that the
"semaphore timeout period has expired".
I thought that maybe the router wasn't passing the DHCP requests
through, so I connected the NIC port of the laptop to the lan side of
the router, and voila, it immediately got an IP. But if the laptop
went into standby mode, then it failed to get the IP after resuming.
So it seems (to me at least) most likely that Win2K Pro doesn't like
to be suspended like that (I have tried this with 2 different laptops,
each with different wireless cards). I have added the entry
"ReleaseOnShutDown", with value of 1, to the registry for that adapter
interface, but that didn't help. And I tried ipconfig/release/renew
over and over, but nothing.
Please, I am desparate to get this working. Any help will be greatly
appreciated.
