DHCP access problem

I have been searching for hours for a solution to this
problem.
I started with a fresh install of Windows XP professional
this morning. Everything was working fine. When I first
booted up I got a warning that windows could not
determine what kind of network setup I had and
recommended running the network setup wizard. My
network/internet access was working fine, though, so I
left it.
Later I went to share a folder and was required to run
the network wizard. I set it up as connecting through a
residential gateway since I've got two computers
connected to a linksys DSL router. Since running the
wizard I have lost all net access. The LAN properties
show that the computer is assigned a private IP address.
It does not seem to be able to access the DHCP server on
the router. The event log error says something about not
being able to initialize the required service. The only
service I could think to check was the DHCP client
service, and that is running fine.

Any help is hugely appreciated!

Don't know if this would help you but when my Windows XP system first comes
up it's with an assigned private IP address. If I click Start - Run - Cmd -
enter and command ipconfig /renew I get a DHCP assigned IP and can access
the network.

Scott--- depends on if you have a static IP or dynamic... like Bob said use ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
if that fails use ipconfig /flushdns + reboot....

I am configured for dynamic IP. I had tried
ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew but the renew failed
to connect to the DHCP server-so I'll have to give
flushdns a try.

Thanks
