I was looking to synchronize shares on 2 servers
together. Created a DFS link to one and then a
replica...and now both are empty.

Found a hidden folder regarding FRS full of mysterious
files on my c: drive. Looks like it could be my files but
can't do anything with them. File names are long with no
extension.

Hi John,
The hidden folder full of 'mysterious files' is probably an FRS staging
folder containing staging files (FRS makes a temporary copy of the files
being replicated in the Staging Folder).

Did you create the (domain based) DFS root and link as specified in the
following website ?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/fileandprint/dfssteps.asp

Was the replication policy manual or automatic ? Details of how you created
the DFS root and link would be helpful.

The new folder you found is likely one called "frs-staging" which would be
created at the root of a drive DFS picks to place staging data. A
description of what a staging area is can be found on article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=323247

In regards to your replica folders being empty, when you created the DFS
link and enabled replication, which one did you set as a Master? Possibly
you set the server with no data as the master and the one with the data as
not the master. Even if this was the case, you may find a folder called
"NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog" inside the share of the non-master server
which would contain any data which was there before replication started.

Please provide more information on precise steps you took to configure DFS
to use FRS.
