Can someone help me stop the dfrgntfs.exe file from being active while I'm burning a DVD? When I'm burning a DVD that file will become very active and kill my write buffer which causes the burned DVD to skip.

Since the built in defragmenter won't normally run in background, I presume you must have Diskeeper installed. If this is the case you need to turn off smart scheduling. Run Diskeeper and go into Actions/Set It and Forget It. I set mine to run between 1pm and 2pm, when I'm normally out at lunch.

Hmm, I don't think I have diskeeper. Here's what happens... Usually when my computer is idol for a few minutes I notice the hard drive will get very active (it seems to do this at any time of the day or night). I hit ctrl-alt-del and notice that the dfrgntfs.exe file is taking up about 40,000k. It usually only does this for 10-30 seconds, then stops, and disappears off the Task Manager... but thats long enough to kill my write buffer when I'm burning a DVD (it does this when I'm not burning a DVD as well.) I searched my files and folders for the word "Diskeeper" and it didn't find anything.

Try running Defrag. Then burning the CDs.

Every few days, WinXP does some behind the scenes housekeeping. A quick and
"light" run of defrag (not a full run) is part of that housekeeping. By
running defrag, it should reset the counter for the automatic housekeeping
and you should be able to get through a burn session without it
interrupting you.

Thank you very much Sharon F! If you, or anyone else knows how to stop Defrag from automatically running behind the scenes all together please let me know. Thanks again!

You're welcome, Dustin.

Personally, I use Raxco's Perfect Disk. One of the settings is to allow it
to handle all defrag operations - including optimizations. If running
defrag before burning is not practical, perhaps this or a similar product
would be a workable solution for you too?
