I also get this message when I hook up my mini DVD cameral to my PC. I'm
using a USB cord that came with my camera. I'm assuming that's part of my
problem or IS my problem and I need to purchase a firewire. Before doing
that, I was wondering if there are any other Hitachi video cam users that
have captured video using Windows Movie Maker. I don't want to go out and
buy a cable and find that WMM just doesn't like my camera.
THANKS!!!

dvd camcorders don't need to be connected. You finalise the dvd and take it
out and pop it in the dvd drive on the pc. You then need to sue software
which allows mpeg editing, such as adobve premiere elements 3 or ulead video
studio 10+, as MM very rarely will.

Not sure about your other cam, if it is minidv then yes, use firewire and
all will be ok.

I've tried putting the disc in the dvd drive but it cannot read it. I've
tried it in my other DVD players to, to no avail. However, I did not
"finalize" it, so I take it I have to do this in the camera before the disc
can be read by a DVD player? THANK YOU for your help!
Chris

Yes you have to finalize the disk so it is set up to work outside of the
camera.
Also I 2nd what Graham said, use firewire with your MiniDV and you will be
happy with the results.

Don't you also need to install a CPI card to plug that firewire into, and
doesn't that get costly? Just wondering. I shouldn't need it if my PC can
play the minidvd, correct?

Thanks for all your help.

Chris

An IEEE card is only around 25-40 bucks depending on the card and the store
you use to purchase it.
If you can get the video ripped from the DVD then no you won't need the
firewire as you won't be capturing any video.

How come when I go to write my wmv to a disk it says there is no cd in. But I
can burn other files to a cd.

That's what I was thinking almost word for word :)

Is it a blank CD or a blank DVD you are trying to write to?

Do you have CD Writing enabled in the drives properties?

Are you using InCD or some other such program which will block XP's native
CD writing abilities?

We need way more information than you provided.

Also it would be beneficial for you and everybody else in the newsgroup if
you start a new thread instead of jumping into another thread.
