Hi All again,
Sorry I am new to the newsgroup protocol, so let me try
again.
I am using a Dell 400sc running Win XP SP1. My install
install of the os went fine. I was able to view the
Devices through Device Manager. I tried to add a second
hard drive, and the process failed. Since then I have
not been able to view devices through the device
manager. Everything else seems to be fine. Looks like
the file that maintains the devices has become corrupt.
Is there a way to rebuild this file or an application
that can fix this issue.

Thanks in advance
Gordon

Hmm that is weird..what kind of hard drive is it? what
steps were taken in adding it? have you tried restoring
the system to a point before the drive was added?

The system has a seagate 40gb drive and I tried to add a
maxtor 60 gb. Set the units to cable select. Windows
came up but gave an error. I went to device manager to
see what it saw and it crashed. After that device manger
was lost.

Sorry, I have not answered all of your questions.
1. the new drive is a maxtor 60gb. If I only put this
drive on the system the bios see's it correctly.
2. I set the drives up first as cable select then I
tried master/slave. Neither would see both drives. Pretty
sure I jumped them correctly. Pulled doc's down from
both manufactures.
3. No I have not tried a restore. I do not have a
backup of this system yet. It is new and I am in the
middle of building it up. Trying to save what I have and
the software installed.

I'm not sure if this caused your problem, but...did you format and partition
your new hard disk?

ok, if it were me, id try setting the original drive to
master and the new one to slave, on the cable make sure
the end of the cable goes to the master, and the
connector in the middle of the cable goes to the new
drive. make sure you have the cables connected in the
right direction, typically the red stripe side of the
cable should be closest to the power connection on the
drives. this should let windows see it fine. If not, it
is possible you have a bad drive, and you should return
it for replacement. as far as the device manager goes, id
just use system restore to take it back to the closest
point to where it was before you did this. system restore
is located in the help and support. hope this helps!

Hi Tom,
Sorry this disk is not quite new. It was running in a
win2k system. I was curious to see if it would just
come up. Thought it should. Disk manager does not see
it. Bios does.

Well tried your suggestion and it still does not work. I
also performed the following;
Made the Maxtor, drive I am trying to add, a master and
plugged it into the cable top first then second
connector. In both cases the bios saw the drive and
acknowledged it properly. The minute I tried adding into
the system as a secondary drive the bios could not see
it. What is up with that.

Thanks in advance for your time and help
Gordon
