If anyone out there can help me please....non-IT person here.

I used an USB flash drive and now none of my USB ports do not work. Even
worse is to go to my Device Manager and see it totally blank. Absolutely
nothing is shown there like before. How can I fix this? I have Windows XP
Home with Service Pack 2 and everything worked well before.

Maybe something here.

Thanks Joe but nothing worked. After searching everything on this site I
also tried going into BIO at boot, services and still I see nothing on my
device manager. The odd thing is that everything but the USB ports works,
including sound.

If anyone has any other ideas I need them please. My next course of action
is to restore the computer to its original default settings, thus losing
everything.

Thank you to anyone who can help.

Try removing all USB controllers from the Device Manager, then reboot.
Hopefully they'll be reinstalled, and work.

Thank you so much for the suggestion, but since my device manager is blank
how can I remove the USB controllers? Is there another way?

Thank again.

Mari

Make sure that the Plug and Play service is enabled and running, if it
isn't the Device Manager list will be blank.

Thank you so much John; however, I've already tried that. I confirmed that
it is enabled and when I rebooted my Device Manager is still blank. This is
the most frustrating thing ever as I am attached to my laptop and between the
device manager blank and all USB ports not working I cannot use a printer,
iPod, Palm Pilot, etc. So frustrating. Thank you so much for your
suggestion.

Well, thank you but nothing worked. Tonight, sadly, I will use the recovery
disk that came with my laptop and start from scratch thus losing a ton of
information that cannot be backed up.

Thanks to everyone who suggested ideas.

Ok, good luck. There are ways of salvaging and saving your files on
that disk if you want to, it isn't all that hard. You can place the
laptop's disk in a USB enclosure (you need a $3 or $4.00 adapter) and
with another working XP computer you should be able to easily retrieve
your files. It isn't all that difficult to do, you or a knowledgeable
friend should be able to do this. Or an half decently competent
computer repair shop should be able to do this for you for a reasonable
price, they can burn the files to CD/DVD for you.

Awesome. Thank you.
