Please HELP! My computer wont recognize my dvd or cd
drives. When I go into my Device Manager, I can
receive "CODE 41" on both drives. Please tell me what
needs to be done to rectify this matter.

The drives were installed into the computer when we
purchased it from Best Buy in April 2003. It was working
fine, but now it states it cant locate the necessary
drive.

My computer info: Sony Vaio with Windows XP. The DVD
drive is Plextor PX-504A

ALL SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOMED.

Thank you.

Hi there Sharon,

Download and install a tiny patch from the following URL to delete upper and
lower filters from the Windows registry:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts/xp_cd_dvd_fix.vbs

Usage: Download the file to your computer and simply double-click it so
that it would automatically get installed. Norton anti-virus software might
warn you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe"
or similar technology enabled. I recommend you to choose "Authorize entire
script" option next Action.

There is no need to delete upperfilter or lower filter, because error code depicts that driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This happens when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.

To resolve this problem uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

Funny, deleting the upper and lower filters values has helped thousands with this problem since XP was in beta.

we delete these keys when we do not see cdrom icon in mycomputer, but cdrom is installed properly in devicemanager
