I have a new PC, and after loading a few 3rd party SW, my DVD drive stopped
working. I receive the following error message:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may
be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

I have read several comments from other newsgroups and have consulted the MS
KB. I noticed that many other people, besides myself, have experienced this
problem. I've been presented with several possible solutions, specifically
those mentioned at these sites which address XP, XP and Vista and Vista
only:

- http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314060
- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

Before I attempt any of these solutions, I was hoping to get some feedback
or lessons learned from this group.

Comment/thoughts?

PhiNuPi77,

Try the first KB on your list. Your problem is likely caused by either
Roxio or Nero, which have had some compatibility issues with Vista. Several
of these KB articles have been known to resolve this problem, since its been
a problem before Vista came to live with us. Removing the upper and lower
filters works for many people. If your CD/DVD burner is causing this
condition, I'll post suggestions for using some burners that people say work
well with Vista. I'll post that below.

PhiNuPi77,

In the event that the burner you are using is causing the problem, here are
links to three burners that people who have used them say work well with
Vista:

http://www.imgburn.com/

http://www.deepburner.com/

http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/homepage/php/index.php?session_langid=2

I obtained those references from another forum. I've not used any of them.
Each one has a free version and a more fully featured pay version. Just for
your information and consideration. Some people say that the most recent
updates for Roxio and for Nero have fixed some (all?) Vista incompatility
issues, but I have no way of knowing.
